RR
loginV2: just the FAQs, ma'm
![]()
Q: Why are you doing this?
A: Because we didn't like the existing Time Warner software, and we wanted an NT service that starts with the system at bootup. A lot of people asked us to re-do the original RRLogin for the new protocol, and so here it is.
Q: Why is this free?
A: Because the other ones are, because the source code base is free, and you're already paying money for the service.
Q: Doesn't Time Warner get upset?
A: Yes, they officially don't like custom user logins. However, they do recognize that there are issues with the existing software, and they do prefer people happy.
As long as RRLogin doesn't crash their network or cause Time Warner any problems, nobody will come gunning for it.
Q: What if there is a problem?
A: Check
here for a new build.
You can also email if you need help. Plus the source is
online.
Q: Can business accounts use this too?
A: Sure can.
Q: Can I use this on other, non-Columbus systems?
A: Probably - nobody has tested this yet, but since Time Warner is
supposedly standardizing on one single login model, it should work fine. The config program has a edit box that contains the name of the login server. If the default of
"login-server" doesn't work, try putting in the complete name - like
"login-server.columbus.rr.com" or "login-server.lrun.nero.com", etc. If the program will not work with either forms, then your RR system does not use the new protocol.
Do not email us asking for help if it doesn't work. We can't work magic.
Q: What systems will it
not work on?
A: Both San
Francisco and Tampa Bay currently do not
use the new login protocol; they may be doing so in the future, but not currently.
As of November 1st, 1999, Columbus Ohio no
longer requires any sort of login and will no longer support the login
protocol.
Q: My area doesn't use logon-server. What do I do now?
A: Check the servers by area page and
plug in the correct one. Other than that, ask on your local
news group. RRLoginV3 will
eventually have an auto-discover feature.
Q: Is the source code available?
A: You bet! Since there is no encryption in this login model, like there was with the previous one, the source is fully online. Get it at the download page.
Q: How do I uninstall the program?
A: Go to the Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, RRLoginV2. If that doesn't work, or else there is no entry in there for RRLoginV2, then go to where the program was installed (c:\windows\RRService2) and drag the
Install.log file onto the Unwise.exe file.
Q: I can't seem to log in!
A: If you're still using "demo" for the username and password, use your real username and password. Otherwise, check your password. Also, sometimes the Time Warner server gets boggy.
If the RRLogin log file indicates that the "hostent" is bad, then
check your login-server setting. If you're sure you've got it right, then your
are probably isn't using the same protocol.
